A Retro-Futuristic Revival
The history of Nepro, an innovative gadget watchmaker from La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, traces back to the late 1950s before the original company ceased operations in the mid-1970s. Recently, the brand has been revitalized, launching its first new timepiece: the Neprosolar. This watch is a thoughtfully crafted homage to a highly advanced model of the same name that Nepro unveiled at the 1976 Baselworld show. The original was revolutionary for its time, blending a modern design with the precision of a digital quartz display and the autonomy of solar power. In an era where reviving vintage watch brands is increasingly popular, the reintroduction of the Neprosolar feels perfectly timed, capitalizing on the growing demand for solar-powered Swiss timepieces and a nostalgia for distinctive 70s design.
Modern Power and Display Technology
The new Neprosolar stands out in the contemporary market as one of the few, if not only, modern solar-powered LED-style wristwatches. A photovoltaic cell enables the internal battery to be fully charged after approximately 20 hours of light exposure, offering an impressive power reserve of up to three years. A convenient four-bar indicator on the display allows users to monitor the battery life. While historic LED components are no longer in production, Nepro has opted for a modern OLED display that emits a traditional red light. This technological update provides a significant boost in brightness and legibility, ensuring the time is easily readable even in direct sunlight. The watch displays the time (in 12- or 24-hour format) and date, which are activated by pressing a button on the case.
Ergonomics and Distinctive Design
The Neprosolar features a unique and ergonomic case that defines it as a “driver’s watch.” The display is angled to allow for easy viewing without needing to turn your wrist, a design intended for convenience while your hands are on a steering wheel. The high-quality steel case, measuring approximately 36mm wide and long, flows seamlessly into an integrated bracelet that tapers elegantly and secures with a butterfly clasp. Its lopsided, boomerang-like profile evokes the aesthetic of high-end 1970s electronics. Protected by a mineral crystal, the case is water-resistant to 30 meters. The brand’s relaunch also included a special collaboration with Bamford London, resulting in an all-black PVD-coated version with blue OLED lights.
The Complete Collector’s Experience
Nepro elevates the purchasing experience with remarkable packaging—a spring-powered aluminum cylinder that opens dramatically to reveal the watch. This attention to detail reinforces its appeal to collectors. Priced at $855 USD, the Neprosolar 2025 edition presents a fun, well-executed, and relatively affordable piece of horological history reimagined for today’s enthusiast. While this initial launch is a faithful recreation, it opens the door for Nepro to potentially develop a broader range of retro-modern, solar-powered watches. For now, the Neprosolar serves as a compelling “blast from the past,” successfully blending vintage charm with the reliability and enhanced functionality of modern engineering.
